Sybase ASE to PostgreSQL — Modernise via S2PIM

Exit Sybase licensing costs using S2PIM — our AI agent for intelligent automated schema conversion, T-SQL → PL/pgSQL translation, and data modernisation at enterprise scale. Experts close the gaps automation can't.

What We Cover

Six disciplines across the full modernisation lifecycle

From schema analysis to production tuning — every phase of your Sybase ASE to PostgreSQL modernisation is covered by S2PIM automation and specialist engineers.

Sybase Schema Analysis

Full inventory of tables, indexes, constraints, datatypes, and Sybase-specific features before conversion begins. S2PIM produces a detailed conversion report — scope, complexity, and estimated timeline — so there are no surprises mid-project.

S2PIM Automated Conversion

Our AI agent converts DDL, schema objects, and stored procedure signatures automatically. At 90%+ automation, S2PIM eliminates the manual rewriting effort that makes modernisations expensive and error-prone.

T-SQL → PL/pgSQL Translation

Stored procedures, triggers, and functions translated from Sybase T-SQL dialect to PostgreSQL PL/pgSQL. S2PIM handles the syntax differences; specialist engineers resolve dialect edge cases that require human judgment.

Data Transfer & Reconciliation

Full data transfer with row-count and checksum reconciliation at every stage. Incremental sync keeps source and target aligned during the cutover window, minimising production downtime.

Application Re-pointing

JDBC/ODBC connection string updates, driver swap from jTDS to the PostgreSQL JDBC driver, and application smoke testing. Your application connects to PostgreSQL without residual Sybase dependencies.

Performance Tuning on PostgreSQL

Index strategy, vacuum policy, pg_stat_statements tuning, and query plan validation post-modernisation. We don't hand over a database that runs — we hand over one that performs.

Why Modernise?

From proprietary ASE to open-source PostgreSQL

SAP ASE licences are expensive, the talent pool is shrinking, and the ecosystem is contracting. PostgreSQL offers a credible, proven path out — without rewriting your business logic from scratch.

Eliminate SAP licensing costs
PostgreSQL is open-source with no per-core or per-socket licence fees. Organisations moving from ASE to PostgreSQL typically reduce database licensing spend by 60–80%.
Escape end-of-life risk
Most ASE deployments still run on versions that are already end-of-life. PostgreSQL's active community and 5-year major release support cycle provides a supported, patched platform for the long term.
Larger talent pool
PostgreSQL engineers are abundant and growing. ASE specialists are retiring. Modernising now future-proofs your hiring and reduces dependency on a shrinking group of specialists.
Cloud-native compatibility
PostgreSQL runs natively on AWS (Aurora, RDS), Azure (Flexible Server), and GCP (Cloud SQL) — unlocking managed hosting, automatic failover, and pay-as-you-go scaling that ASE cannot match.
Modern performance features
Parallel query, partitioning, JSONB, and pg_stat_statements give PostgreSQL capabilities that ASE 16 cannot match — without additional licence packs or hardware investment.
Compliance & audit readiness
Running on an end-of-life database is increasingly flagged in PCI-DSS, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 audits. Moving to PostgreSQL removes the finding at its root.
How S2PIM Works

Automation-first. Expert-verified.

Full schema scan before any conversion starts. S2PIM catalogues tables, indexes, constraints, datatypes, stored procedures, triggers, and data volumes — producing a structured report that scopes complexity and timeline before a single line of DDL is touched.

90%+ of conversion handled automatically. DDL, stored procedures, and triggers converted at scale — datatype mappings, constraint syntax, sequence equivalents, and bulk T-SQL-to-PL/pgSQL translation resolved without manual intervention.

Sybase specialists close what automation cannot. Complex cursor patterns, proprietary system procedure calls, and T-SQL behaviours with no direct PL/pgSQL equivalent need contextual judgement — our engineers handle these and run a full regression suite before cutover.

Our Process

Four stages from discovery to production

S2PIM drives the automation. Our engineers drive the quality. Every stage is reviewed before the next begins.

Sybase Discovery & S2PIM Scan

S2PIM agent scans the full ASE schema, stored procedures, and data volume. Conversion report produced — scope, complexity, and timeline confirmed before any modernisation work begins.

S2PIM Automated Conversion

AI pipeline converts schema and T-SQL automatically. Output reviewed by a Sybase specialist before proceeding. Nothing moves to the next stage without engineer sign-off.

Expert Gap Resolution & Testing

Engineers resolve remaining incompatibilities — cursor patterns, proprietary system calls, and dialect edge cases. Full regression suite run against PostgreSQL. Application tested end-to-end in staging.

Cutover & Post-Modernisation Support

Incremental sync to cutover window. Application re-pointed. Sybase licence retired. 30-day post-modernisation support included — performance monitoring, query tuning, and incident response on the new PostgreSQL environment.
