A Recurring Capital Sink With No Endpoint
The business was approaching its third on-premises hardware refresh in under ten years, each cycle consuming budget that never translated into new capability — only continuity of the status quo.
A discrete manufacturing company was staring down its third consecutive on-premises Oracle hardware refresh in under a decade, with no disaster recovery site to show for the investment. OptiSol re-architected the environment onto OCI Autonomous Database with built-in Data Guard-based DR, ending the refresh cycle and adding resilience the on-premises setup never had.
The company's Oracle database underpinned production scheduling, inventory, and supply-chain visibility across its plant floor, yet every capital cycle went toward keeping the same on-premises architecture alive rather than making it more resilient.
The business was approaching its third on-premises hardware refresh in under ten years, each cycle consuming budget that never translated into new capability — only continuity of the status quo.
Despite three hardware generations, the company had never budgeted for a secondary site, leaving production scheduling and inventory systems with a single point of failure the whole time.
New production lines and expanded supply-chain integrations kept adding load, and DBA time increasingly went to manual performance tuning rather than the improvements the business actually needed.
Rather than recommend a fourth hardware refresh or a like-for-like cloud VM migration, OptiSol proposed re-architecting onto OCI Autonomous Database — moving the DR and tuning burden into the platform itself.
OptiSol profiled the Oracle estate against AWR and Statspack history spanning multiple production cycles, identifying which workloads were strong Autonomous Database candidates and which custom PL/SQL objects needed remediation first.
The target architecture paired OCI Autonomous Database with a Data Guard standby in a second OCI region, giving the company a tested disaster recovery posture from day one instead of an afterthought bolted on later.
OCI Database Migration handled schema and metadata conversion while an RMAN-based backup restore populated the Autonomous Database target, validated against row counts and checksums before any cutover planning began.
The team rehearsed a full Data Guard switchover to the standby region twice before go-live, confirming production scheduling and inventory applications could reconnect automatically without manual DNS or connection-string changes.
Performance was benchmarked against the pre-migration AWR baseline for 30 days after cutover, with Autonomous Database's built-in auto-tuning changes tracked separately to confirm they were net improvements, not just different plans.
We stopped asking 'can we afford the next hardware refresh' and started asking what our DBA team should actually be building. That's the real shift Autonomous Database made possible." — OptiSol Oracle Engineering Lead
